The Turn Toward Busan International Commemoration Ceremony, held in remembrance of the sacrifice and contributions of United Nations servicemen who fell during the Korean War in defense of the shared values of peace and freedom of the Republic of Korea, took place at the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Korea. The ceremony was hosted by the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs.
At exactly 11:00am, the ceremony began with a one-minute moment of silence, during which people around the world turned toward Busan, where the Cemetery is located, to honor the fallen.
The Turn Toward Busan ceremony is an international commemorative event that has been held annually since 2007, following a proposal by the Korean War Veterans Association of Canada (President Vincent Courtenay). Observed each year on November 11 at 11:00am (Korea Standard Time), the ceremony invites Korean War veterans, their families, and citizens around the world to commemorate the fallen United Nations servicemen by turning toward Busan from their respective locations. (Local observance times vary by country.)
The ceremony was attended by approximately 800 participants, including H.E. Kwon Oh-eul, Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs; the Hon. Park Heong-joon, Mayor of Busan; diplomatic representatives of UN participating countries; H.E. Suh Jeong-In, Custodian of the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Korea; and Korean War veterans and their families.
