남아프리카공화국 참전용사께
안녕하십니까. 부경대학교 UN 서포터즈 16기입니다. 남아프리카공화국 참전 용사분들께 한국 전쟁 참전에 대한 감사와 애도를 표하고자 합니다. 국가의 평화를 위한 여러분들의 굳은 의지와 빛나는 용기 덕분에 대한민국은 비로소 진정한 평화와 자유를 얻게 되었습니다.
아프리카 대륙 최남단에 위치한 남아프리카공화국은 우리와 외교 관계가 없었음에도 집단안보체제 유지라는 대의 아래에 1950년 7월 1일 지지 성명을 발표하고, 6.25 전쟁 참전을 결정하였습니다. 남아프리카공화국은 유엔 참전국 중 유일하게 공군부대만 파견한 국가로, 장교 29명, 부사관 및 병사들 157명으로 구성된 병력을 지원하여 국군과 함께 활약하였습니다.
“자유와 국가 간의 친선은 남아인들의 높은 이상이요 자랑스러운 유산이다. 이들이 치른 큰 희생은 영원한 격려이어라.” 남아프리카공화국 참전 기념비에 새겨진 비문처럼 참전 용사분들의 숭고한 희생과 공로를 잊지 않고, 그들이 남긴 평화라는 자랑스러운 유산을 지켜나가겠습니다.

Dear South African veterans
Hello, I am the 16th member of the UN Supporters of Pukyong National University. I would like to express my gratitude and condolences to the veterans of South Africa for their participation in the Korean War. Thanks to your strong will and courage for the peace of our nation, the Republic of Korea has finally achieved true peace and freedom.
South Africa, located in the southernmost part of the continent, issued a statement of support on July 1, 1950, under the cause of maintaining a collective security system, and decided to participate in the Korean War, even though it had no diplomatic relations with us. South Africa was the only United Nations participant to send air force units, and worked with the Korean Armed Forces by supporting a force of 29 officers, 157 non-commissioned officers and soldiers.
"Freedom and friendship between nations are high ideals and a proud legacy of South Koreans. The great sacrifices they have made are eternal encouragement." Like the inscription on the monument in South Africa, I will not forget the noble sacrifices and contributions of the veterans, and I will keep the proud legacy of peace that they have left.
