To the Australian Korean War Veterans

Dear Veterans,

Today, we have come to the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Korea to express our deepest gratitude and respect to all Australian veterans who dedicated themselves to the freedom and peace of the Republic of Korea.

On June 25, 1950, the peaceful lives of the Korean people were shattered by the outbreak of war. At a time when help was desperately needed, Australia became the second country, after the United States, to commit forces to the United Nations Command. Australia deployed its Army, Navy, and Air Force, and more than 17,000 Australian servicemen and women served in Korea throughout the war, dedicating themselves to defending the freedom and peace of this country.

At the Battle of Kapyong in 1951, the 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, held its position against a much larger Chinese force. The Australian Navy and Air Force also carried out vital operations in support of the war effort. In the course of the war, 340 Australian service members lost their lives and 1,216 were wounded. Far from their homes and families, they made these sacrifices in a foreign land, leaving behind the lives they had known and the people who loved them.

The dedication and sacrifice of Australian servicemen and women played an important role in helping the Republic of Korea regain peace. Even after the signing of the Armistice Agreement, Australian forces remained in Korea until 1957, continuing to contribute to the stability and peace of the Korean Peninsula.

Today, we live ordinary lives. We attend school, spend time with our families, and make plans for the future. Yet we know that this peaceful life was never something that was simply given to us. For some, peace meant risking their lives, and for others, it meant never returning home. The freedom and peace we enjoy today carry within them the courage and sacrifice of Australian veterans who devoted themselves to the Republic of Korea.

We will not allow your sacrifice to remain merely a part of the past. We will remember those who rest here, cherish the value of peace, and strive to build a society where people respect and care for one another.

To all Australian veterans who reached out to the Republic of Korea in its time of greatest need, despite being thousands of miles from home, we offer our deepest gratitude and respect.

Please know that the peace you fought to protect continues to live on in the Republic of Korea today.
We will never forget your dedication and sacrifice.
