To. The Korean War Veterans whose lives ended in a foreign land

Hello, My name is Jo Eun Seo. I am in 1st grade in Boonpo Middle School. The first time I visited the United nations Memoral Cemetery in Korea was when I was 6. At that time, I thought it was strange why such a beautiful and clean place was neither a park nor hotel.

My grandfather's hometown was in North Korea. Once, he told me about his story. In the Korean War, he fled to the Girjeadow POW Camp from Heungnam wharf by ship. As I heard about his difficult journey, I just thought that the war was very uncomfortable, dirty and people were hungry. Howerver, looking back, there are much more important things than that. He didn't to know more.

My grandfather had a brother who went to the war and didn't come back. My granfather is 80 years old now; however, he has clear memories and a longing for his brother who he was separated from when he was 17 years old. I realixed that the worst thing about war is people losing their families; not discomfort, cold or hunger.
My grandfather's brother passed away in his country. But it is different with soldiers who lay in the UN Memorial Cemetery.

On Memorial Day last year, I had a chance again to visit the UN Memorial Cemetery. I read the names inscribed on the graves and the writing on the Memorial and cenotaph carefully; which I didn't do when I was young. Therefore, I got to know that 2300 soldiers from 16 countries entered the war to help our country. There were many young soldiers too.

The soldiers had their families praying for the safe return to their home. It pains me so much. Only then, I could understand why the UN Memorial Cemetery is a meaningful place where peaple learn about the preciousness of peace and the value of freedom. It also informs that our people appreciate the sacrifice of the UN soldiers.

I didn't experience the war but when the UN flag was descending with the sound of a trumpet, I paid a silent tribute for peace and rest of the soldiers. The solemnity and piety made me lower my head. I have respected for the UN soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the peace of our country.
