친애하는 에티오피아 참전용사분들께

 안녕하십니까, 15기 부경대학교 UN 서포터즈입니다. 오늘 저희는 대한민국의 평화와 자유를 위해 많은 도움을 주신 에티오피아 참전용사분들께 깊은 감사를 표하고자 합니다.

 에티오피아는 한국전쟁 당시 아프리카에서 유일하게 지상병을 지원한 국가입니다. 1951년 UN의 파병 요청을 받은 후 황실근위대를 포함한 6,037명의 최정예 부대인 ‘강뉴부대’를 파병했습니다. 강뉴부대는 강원도 화천 적근산 전투, 삼각고지 전투 등 많은 전투에서 업적을 남겼습니다. 1953년 7월 종전까지 총 124명의 전사자, 536명의 부상자가 발생했으며, 253전 253승이라는 불패의 기록을 세워 뛰어난 군사적 역량을 보여주었습니다.

 휴전 이후인 1956년까지 우리나라에 주둔하여 비무장지대 순찰 작전 등으로 전후 복구에 최선을 다했습니다. 더불어 부대원들의 월급을 모아 경기도 동두천에 ‘보화고아원’을 설립하여 전쟁으로 인한 고아들을 보살펴주며 아이들이 전쟁의 아픔을 치유하는 과정에도 많은 기여를 했습니다.

 치열한 전쟁의 순간과 전후의 모든 과정까지 여러분들의 열정과 평화를 위한 숭고한 정신이 깃들어 있다는 것을 알고 있습니다. 작고 낯선 나라에서 오직 자유를 지키기 위한 신념 하나로 목숨 바쳐 주신 모든 에티오피아 참전용사분들께 존경심과 감사를 표합니다. 여러분들의 용맹함과 치열한 투지가 없었더라면 지금의 평화와 자유는 존재하지 못했을 것입니다.
 여러분들의 피와 땀이 대한민국의 희망이 되었다는 것을 항상 가슴 깊이 새기며 헌신적인 희생을 영원히 잊지 않고 기억하겠습니다.

Dear, Veterans of Ethiopia
  Hello, this is United Nations Supporters of Pukyong National University. Today, we would like to express our deep gratitude to the veterans of Ethiopia who provided significant assistance for the peace and freedom of South Korea.
  During the Korean War, Ethiopia was the only African nation to send army. In response to the UN deployment request in 1951, Ethiopia dispatched the elite force, total of 6,037 troops, including the Imperial Guard known as the "Kagnew Battalion." The Kagnew Battalion distinguished itself in various battles, such as the Battle of Jiksan Mountain in Hwacheon, Gangwon Province, and the Battle of Samgakgoji. Until the armistice in July 1953, they achieved a remarkable record of 253 battles and 253 victories, with 124 casualties and 536 wounded.
  They remained stationed in South Korea until 1956, contributing to post-war recovery through activities like patrolling the demilitarized zone. Additionally, they collected the salaries of their members to establish the "Bohwa Orphanage" in Dongducheon, Gyeonggi Province, providing care for war orphans and contributing significantly to the healing process for children affected by the war.
  We acknowledge the passion and noble spirit you demonstrated from the intense moments of war to the aftermath. We express our respect and gratitude to all Ethiopian veterans who sacrificed their lives with the belief of preserving freedom from invasion for a small and unfamiliar country. Without your courage and determination, the current peace and freedom would not have been possible.
  We will always engrave in our hearts the fact that your blood and sweat became the hope of South Korea. We will forever remember your dedicated sacrifices.
