Letter to a UN War Veteran
‘Dear mother’
‘This letter is for the soldier’s wife. I hope that your tears will not soak the letter. I am flying willingly in combat, and I will have a flight at night with my companies by piloting the B-26. My father is fighting to keep the freedom. Now, it’s the time that I should provide support. Please do not pray for me. Instead just pray for my comrades who are called up to fight. Among them, some have a wife, wishing them back, and others have not started a family, yet. I will do my best. It’s always my duty. Goodbye.’
Do you remember? It’s the letter that your son wrote to your wife. In the letter, he expressed his respect to you for participating in the Korean War. Also, he thought his comrades’ safety was even better than his. Your son followed the same path as you and he died a glorious death on the battlefield. It is impossible to explain your sadness. I don’t know it exactly, yet. But, I can vaguely understand that sorrow. In spite of this situation, you prevented unnecessary additional military strength loss by halting the rescue of your son. Hearing of your son’s death, you made assurance doubly sure for your commands. But, in the deep part of your mind, you should have born the sadness that you couldn’t give love to your son. I also have worries that I don’t want anyone to notice. I try to stay cool, it’s because I don’t want to show my shameful appearance and cause anxiety to others. I seem to be looking fine, but I am feeling unimaginable pain inwardly.
You were one of the most admired generals who made a contribution to World War 1 and 2. On arriving Korea, you said “I will be here to win. If you don’t want to be with me, go home right away.” It was a reply to the advisor’s opinion in which he said “We have no chance of winning, so we should withdraw to Tokyo.” By saying this, you changed the mood at once. When I saw this anecdote, I thought the mental attitude is the most important. I have my goal and I am striving to achieve it. I can’t fight with sword and shield. But, I want to contribute to the development of our country with pen and paper. As I am now sixteen, I have lots of thinking about my future such as what I want to be and what I can do to help for Korea. Your motto, the “complete winning” is helpful to me mentally to make an effort to achieve my dream.
General, you said that Korea is your second home. Moreover, you contributed to the development of Korea. The establishment of a fertilizer factory, Korea Society, and the Korea Military Academy as well as military system reformation are all your achievements. Especially, the reformation of the military had many oppositional forces even in America, however you made it by pledging to the president, Eisenhower. How many people can dedicate so much to another country? You fought ardently, and also lost your son in the war. After the war, you tried to develop Korea. I can’t adequately thank you for your efforts to help our country.
It is the mindset that not only Korea but also other countries naturally emulate. I will never forget you dedication to our nation, too. We will always remember what you did.
