Dear Korean War veterans
About 2300 soldiers who died in the korean War have been laid to rest at the UN Memorial Cemetery. You who fought against communists are here with us in the UN Memorial Cemetery.
I can feel that you are still with us. Because I live in Busan, I have passed the UN Memorial Cemetery several times. Sometimes I happened to see lots of foreigners and I wondered who they were and why they were there. As I grew up, naturally I learned who they were. But I have forgotten about them for a long time.
Last summer vacation, I went to the UN Memorial Cemetery to do volunteer work. I was tired because of the hot weather, but I couldn't complain or joke with my friends. The quiet, neat and tidy atmosphere made me voluntarily silent and the hot weather made me imagine your sufferings while I was doing volunteer work. So I tried hard to listen to the teacher’s explanation and to participate in activities willingly. After I listened to the teacher's, I realized the Korean War was not just Korea's thing. You and your soldiers helped Korea to fight for democracy. Most people who visit the UN Memorial Cemetery might be veterans' descendants. Some of them might visit Korea to meet you far away from here for the first time in their life. Having seen them, somehow I didn't want them to be disappointed, so I tried to make a good impression. At that moment, I didn't know the reason but later I realized why I did it. It's because I feel like we are old friends even though we live in different countries.
Volunteering in the UN Memorial Cemetery, I could learn and think about the Korean War again.
I got to know not only about Korea's position, but also yours.
If I were you, would I want to fight hard for a foreign country? Could I sacrifice my youth or my life to keep not my area, but for Nakdong River or Seoul? I would regard that the Korean War was not related to me.
But you helped us and I heard that you still have thoughts to help Korea. I could feel you love Korea as much as Koreans. You gave us a hand when Korea was in need of help. My country became safe with your help. Just like the old saying, Friends in need are friends indeed.
You and I aren't peers, but we share the same emotions. We experienced the same pain, The Korean War. So I didn't feel that you are just another person and not related to me at that time.
I can know the reason why I wanted to make a good impression now. It's because we are friends in the global village.
Also, what if I were your mother? My parents worry about me if they can’t contact me or if I am a little late. But there were mothers who sent their son alone to an unfamiliar place. If I were her, I would send my son without expressing any worries. However, I might feel very uncomfortable because my son was in a place which was dangerous, and the only thing that I could have done was wait for news from him. Mothers were too old to go to Korea and it was very dangerous so it was hard to come here to meet you, even if their sons got any accidents. Having been separated from their families, veterans protected my country to make the Korea we have today possible. So I would like to do something which could be helpful for my country. I thought I should have patriotism to keep my country. I think loving and keeping our country, which you gave really hard to save us, can be a way to express our thanks. Also, I want to help others as you did.
During the Korean war, the Korean army and UN forces fought at the front and prevented more sacrifices. Also, I can write this letter now thanks to your sacrifices. Korea has seen a great development, you helped us not to be conquered by North Korea and to keep our freedom.
I would like to help you as you did. I hope that this letter can be helpful to you.
Veterans might be over 80 now. If you are living and watching from heaven, I hope you can be proud of the Korea you saved. We will always be thankful to you and try to make a proud Korea for to share between us.
