To. Veterans of the Korean War

Hello. My name is Dabin Kim. I’m in the third grade of Gaegum girls‘ middle school. I am very interested in English.

I heard about this event for commemorating Memorial Day a few days ago and wanted to participate in it. I also really like history so I would like to write a letter to you!

I really appreciate you that entered the war on our side. Although Korea wasn’t your country, you did your best to make us win. When I learned about our painful history, the Korean war, I was a little bit surprised. In the history, North Korea invaded us first and they advanced on South Korea quickly. Then we were occupied our territory almost, so we asked America to help us. So thankfully, they sent their army and also the UN forces. Thanks to them, we could get back our capital, Seoul, and we progressed almost to the end of North Korea continuously. But China helped North Korea, and the war back to square one. Finally we stop fighting temporarily, and this situation has lasted since then.

I’m so appreciate for your sacrifice whatever you have a reason for your advantage. If you went back to your hometown, you could have meet your family. But you fought for us with all your strength without giving up. Also, I am sorry that you suffer a lot of damage because of Korean War. If it had not been for the war, such tragic situation wouldn’t have happened. The war is never supposed to happen. I feel regretful.

Though we got back our territory by the war, it is very unfortunate situation that one country, Korea, separate in two countries, North Korea and South Korea. But if you didn’t help us, South Korea wasn’t here, and we may not live here comfortably and safely, too. We really thank about it. If there wasn’t your sacrifice like that, we can’t imagine how we live now.

We have been honored many veterans since the war. One of it is Memorial day is on June 6th in Korea and we honor domestic and foreign veterans at that day. And we made UN Cemetery and honor those who fought and died for our country. Many Korean people sometimes visit this cemetery and it’s the place where students in Korea always go on a field trip.

Because of this war, so many people were harmed. It made many separated families, orphans, starving people, and sacrificed people. It was very terrible. We have to realize that war is so horrific thing and it must not happen again based on our experience, the Korean war.

I appreciate you that fought with all your strength to help us. Although Korea wasn’t your own country, thank you for fighting with us.

Lastly, I pay veterans of foreign war respects to the souls of all the fallen heroes who died protecting our country. Thank you. We won’t forget you.
