아래 글은 부산지방보훈청 주최로 열린 [제5회 해외참전용사께 감사의 영문 편지 쓰기 대회]에서 장려상을 입상한 개금여자중학교 이아현 학생의 글을 옮긴 것 입니다.
Dear Veterans of the United Nations,
Good day!
I am A Hyun Lee. These days, there are many kinds of wars such as religious wars, nuclear wars, cultural wars, and civil wars. I have studied Korean history about the war like Japanese invasions of Korea, the Manchu war, and the Korean war.
When I was 11, I knew about the Korean war through a video about foreign soldiers.
I was interested in this video. So I watched a lot of things about the Korean war.
I think that most works about Korean history are popular. Especially, history about the war is the most popular among them. Korean people find heroes in the history.
For example, the movie ‘Roaring Currents’ made the best movie record in Korea last year.
Like this, many people respect a war hero like Yi Sun-Shin. But most people find only hero, They don’t know about the war that their heroes commanded. Further, students think history is obligatory or compulsory education. However, it is really necessary for us to learn history in our life.
Traces of the ravages of war can be found in Busan, because it was located in the South of the Korean Peninsula and marine city which is related to sea. So, during The Korean war, Busan was an important strategic point.
Therefore, Gamcheon Village and Amidong Village were the places where refugees had lived. International market which was made by refugees who were poor, and the U. N. Memorial Cemetery for the veterans of the United Nations have been in Busan. Like this, although we can find the traces of war easily, we forget more and more about June 25, the Korean war.
However, We can find ‘the Korean War’ in many movies or dramas in Korea.
The works that describe the situations during the Korea war have been loved by many people.
For example, the movie 'Tae Guk Gi' was watched by millions of people and submitted as a movie part candidate in an academy Award for Best Foreign Language film. Moreover, not only the movies 'Welcome to Dongmakgol' and '71 Into the Fire' but also a TV program called 'Comrade' were very popular in Korea. These works have been exported around the world. So, June 25 Korean war is known to many people. When I watched 'Comrade', I could indirectly experience how The Korean war was. I watched that many kinds of tragic problems like dispersed families, destruction of nature, hunger, and refugee happened through The Korean war. Even though the war finished, they have been suffering since then. So, the war must never happen again.
Also, we must never forget you because you devoted your life in The Korean war. but I am so sad as some koreans forget both your devotion and sacrifice. If so, they don't know the seriousness and danger of war. On the news or internet, They show the level of tension from the war of South Koreans is very low. If so, what is the matter in our life? In fact, my country is the only divided nation in the world and we are still on cease-fire with North Korea. In other words, we can be exposed to danger easily. But, most people strongly believe that they can always live safely. We must be able to know about the danger of war and prepare for it .
Also the young think 'we can not reunite'. Depending on Yonhap News, teenagers and young adults don't want reunification. Because they think North Korea is different from us. For example, the language, intonation, cultures and etc. As they think North Korea is not the same but different, they believe they are safe from danger of a war.
Due to the level of tension from the war of South Korea, I think this competition is very important. It is because we can realize the pains of war and dangers of it. So, we can live to cherish everything more valuable than before.
Thank you very much for the opportunity to write to you and for protecting my country, the Republic of South Korea. We will never forget your noble sacrifice and devotion. Please take care and have a beautiful life with your family.
