Dear all Veterans who fought for South Korea during the Korean War,

Hello, I am Ye-eun, Lee, a Gaerim middle school 3rd grader. Spring is over, and a sweltering days are coming. On this time of year, I visit National Cemetery in Daejeon to memorize my grandfather, who was a veteran fought for Vietnamese. In the cemetery, there are many fallen soldiers who showed their loves toward this country by practicing them and my grandfather is one of them. I feel immeasurable gratitude when I go there and see an endless graves.

In 1945, as World War II terminating, Korea was liberated from illegal occupation of Japanese empire. However, it was divided into south and north by the 38th parallel of latitude. After this tragedy, there were some political controversy. Finally, the Korean War broken out all of a sudden by Kim, Il-sung, the North Korean leader. Even now over the past 60 years, memories of that time are vivid.

There are some movies about the situation at that time. When I watched them, I felt fear, sadness, and anger. We cannot know the scare of boys who fought against the enemy with rifles instead of studying with pens, and caught sights of countless fellow soldiers dying next to them. Although the fought ended long ago, Lots of Koreans including me are still admiring your priceless work done to my country.

A few days ago, I heard a news about a French war veteran. He said “Please bury my remains in Korea that I kept and loved.” before he died. He was buried in United Nation Memorial Cemetery in Busan by his will. Including this French veteran, many other soldiers from 21 nations fought with all their might though Korea was not their country, and finally the war came to an end. Thanks to the devotion from those countries, we could win the war.

This war gave us a huge damage on our economy, civil casualty and social infrastructures. After the war, we had gone through a miraculous development called ‘Miracle on the Han River’, and are still changing. Korea became one of the most advanced countries in the world and now it’s giving helps to those countries in need.

Even until now, the confrontation between the north and the south is still persistent. However, we don’t feel that tension and sense of crisis in life. Thanks to your sacrifice, we are living the life as we are now so I always appreciate and never forget your devotion.

With sincere gratitude,
Ye-eun, Lee
