아래 글은 부산지방보훈청 주최로 열린 [제5회 해외참전용사께 감사의 영문 편지 쓰기 대회]에서 장려상을 입상한 대천중학교 박소희 학생의 글을 옮긴 것 입니다.
Dear honorable UN war veterans,
It is a great honor for me to be able to write a thank-you letter for the respectful, brave warriors who fought and struggled for Korea in every way.
You were a Marymond, indwelling hope, fresh-blown during the cold-hearted indifferent winter, where desolateness only lied above the earth, stretching miles and miles forward, with the end that seemed unreachable. You were the Marymond, and were the ones to support us to extricate from the miserable time of darkness that we needed to pull through.
I appreciate, with my whole heart, for everything you did for Korea and our people. I respect and thank every single warrior who fell in the fierce battlefield. We can never forget your heroic exploit and your spirit of sacrifice for our people.
I would like to thank Sir Richard Seabury Whitcomb for his charitable and meritorious deed he performed for the sake of Korea. Sir Whitcomb, you were the one who, on November 1953, saved 30,000 people when a fire broke out from the refugee shantytown and spread to the Busan Station. You rescued them from starving, by distributing food and tents from the ordnance depot. If it wasn’t for you, I cannot imagine how much loss of lives there could have been. When you were summoned to the U.S Congressional hearing, the words you spoke touched my heart. Your words were, “War is not only done with guns and swords. A true victory is won by solicitude for the people.” I respect your belief in the value of true victory. You are the true general who takes priority on the well being of the citizens.
Also, I would like to express my gratitude for your determine efforts to construct lots of medical institutions. Medical facilities such as MaryKnoll Hospital were the outcomes of your efforts, which included carrying out a campaign while wearing Korean traditional clothing to accumulate money.
A nation without education is more dangerous than a nation without armies. Our future depends on the quality of education our generations receive. Sir Whitcomb, you knew this better than anyone else. Thank you so much for devoting your time and money to the establishment of Busan National University. I cannot imagine how much effort would be have to taken to convince the Korean government to offer 500,000 pyeong of Jangjeon-dong site and to provide $250,000 that would be invested to building the university.
Furthermore, You were truly the father of the war orphans. Thank you for your affection towards the pitiable children whose family perished in the middle of the war. I admire your warm-heartedness and generosity. I am sure your efforts became a huge help to the young victims of the war who fell into despair. Dear Sir Whitcomb, you were a person who genuinely loved Korea more than anyone else.
Again, dear brave warriors, I don’t know how to express my gratitude to every action you took for Korea. After all, I am just a middle-school student, but it cannot limit nor weaken my lively sense of gratitude towards you. We will always pay a tribute to all your charitable deeds. We wish to thank you, deep in our heart. For so many lives, you were a big part.
