The United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Korea is the only sacred ground of its kind in the world.

UNMCK Burial Criteria

Criteria for burial at the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Korea (UNMCK) have been defined by the 1959 Agreement between the United Nations and the Republic of Korea for the Establishment and Maintenance of the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Korea (hereafter “The Agreement”), as well as by precedents established by decisions of the Commission for the UNMCK.

If you are interested in applying for burial at the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Korea, please contact your nation’s embassy in South Korea, and they will be pleased to assist you in the application process.

As established by The Agreement, burial at the UNMCK is available to

  • Any personnel who may die while serving under the UN Command in Korea
  • Any person who may die while serving with the United Nations or any of its organs in Korea.

As established by decisions of the Commission for the UNMCK, the following are also eligible for burial at the UNMCK

  • Veterans of the Korean War.
  • Spouses of Korean War veterans who are interred at the UNMCK are eligible to be interred together.
  • Spouses of soldiers who died in the Korean War and who are interred at the UNMCK are eligible to be interred together.
  • Siblings of soldiers interred at the UNMCK, and who also served in the Korean War, are eligible to be interred together.
