United Nations Day is observed on Oct. 24 to mark the anniversary of the day that the United Nations Charter entered into force in 1945.
 
During the 1950-53 Korean War, 16 countries deployed troops that fought under the United Nations Command that defended South Korea against invading North Korean and later Chinese forces. Another six countries contributed medical personnel to help treat wounded soldiers and civilians.
 
Around 37,000 soldiers sent by UN member states were killed in combat, while 113,000 were wounded or went missing-in-action.
