UNMCK - UNITED NATIONS MEMORIAL CEMETERY IN KOREA

To war veteran of Denmark medical team Hello I am Jung Yu-Jeong, 2nd year high school student of Republic of Korea. The Korean War was occurred by North Korea which invaded South Korea. Although 67 years passed, aftereffect is still remaining. Korean families are separated in South and North each other. My great grandmother is separated family her husband is remained in North Korea. She is still waiting her husband news every day although she is already over 90 and does not have much time to live. Like this, the Korean War is not ended to me. But, in globally the Korean War is forgotten. So, I started to learn the Korean War. During the Korean War, there were the countries which sent both combat troops and medics. Especially, Denmark sent a great hospital ship, Jutlandia. At that time, Denmark sent a high-tech hospital ship and practiced humanitarianism by curing wounded soldiers and civilians. During the Korean War, Denmark was the first country informed UN participation of military aid when UN decided to support. Their painful history of resistless power again German troops during the Second World War made support South Korea. It is said that Denmark recalled their miserable past from the sacrifice of weak country in boarder area in the whirlpool of cold war They recreated normal passenger ship, Jutlandia, to hospital one. Jutlandia was popular to the injured because of high medical quality. Almost 5,000 soldiers were treated and only 29 soldiers were died in the ship. The medical team insisted they have to cure civilians also according to the spirit of Red Cross, but UN headquarters did not approved because it will disrupt treatment of the injured. Hameric, captain of ship, persuaded UN headquarters several times and got the approval of civilian cure in the condition of evacuation of hospital room when soldiers get in the ship. It is the 4 months later after dispatch. Inside the hospital ship, dedicated children room for a war orphan was constructed and did formal schooling also. The number of treated civilians is almost 6,000 which number is bigger one of treated soldiers. But, there was observation that the number of secretly treated civilians without report to UN reached almost 18,000. In 1958, Denmark established National Medical Center in South Korea together with Norway and Sweden medial team who run field hospital. At that time, the heads of a department of general hospital were dispatched and hospital size was the biggest in the East. After 10 years, 1968, when South Korea’s media level is enhanced, they donated National Media Center to South Korea government and medical team went back to their country. In the middle of terrible war, the hospital ship, Jutlandia, spread the spirit of peace and charity of Denmark. I am very appreciating for Denmark war veterans of medical team. Dear war veterans of Denmark medical team, thank you very much for the fighting for unknown East country by sacrificing your youth. I cannot forget your youth and sacrifice. The freedom and peace is not free. These are the outcome of your sacrifice. I will do my best to be better South Korean remembering your sacrifice. Thank you forever Jung Yu-Jeong
