Dear Korean War Veterans June is a very depressed month for Koreans. June has some historic events such as the Memorial Day, and The Korean War. Every time I commemorate Memorial Day, I think of the Korean War Veterans. Several years ago, when I went to Paris/France, I met a Korean War veteran in the amphibious car ride. He asked me if I am a Korean. He told me that he is a war veteran, and he proudly told me where he worked and what he did during the Korean War. He even told me a few Korean words to me like “gomapsumnida, Annenghaseyo”. he also mentioned Korean government invited Korean war veterans last year so he had a chance to visit Korea almost 60years after the war. he seemed to have been quite impressed at the dramatic changes in Korea. At first I didn’t know what to say to him. I just smiled at him. He was proud of me because he got thanked from a boy in a country he helped. Also, before a show started, the veterans came up, and everyone bowed to them. The veterans also got a discount. I think in America the veterans are treated highly, but not in Korea. As the veterans helped us, we should help the veterans. We should not make the Korean war the forgotten war. We should not forget the hardship of the veterans, and always thank the veterans family. Near the Busan Cultural Center, there is a UN memorial cemetery. I didn’t know about the UN memorial cemetery. But I got interested about the UN Memorial Cemetery after meeting a veteran in San Diego. I visited the UN Memorial Cemetery, and I felt thankful after bowing to the veteran’s resting place. I felt thankful for the veteran’s family, love and friends for letting the veteran risk his lives and fight for Korea. Because the veterans were there, fighting for Korea, Now we stand here free, and safe. If the veterans weren’t there, we would not even exist. Thank you for serving as a heroic example of who we are and what we can dream to be. Thank you for delaying your plans of college, marriage, and other opportunities. Thank you for sacrificing time with your families and missing those significant milestones the rest of us take for granted. Thank you. Sincerely, Jiwon Moon
