Thank you for commemorating this day. It is very meaningful for our family.

Our great-uncle died in the Korean War while serving as part of the Colombian Battalion. There are many military members in our family, most of them having served in the Army or Navy.

At the time, the Army notified two brothers — our grandfather and great-uncle — who were almost the same age, and gave them the chance to decide who would go. At such a young age, they chose to flip a coin. The brother chosen by the coin toss, our great-uncle, went to Korea, fought, and died in the war.

The brother who stayed, our grandfather, always taught the importance of this day and of remembering those who died in combat. In our family, they often say that if the coin had landed differently, our entire story would have changed. We are here today because of that moment — and because of the service and sacrifice of our great-uncle, Cascante Parra, Jesús María.

Honrando el Legado de Servicio de Nuestra Familia

Gracias por conmemorar este día. Es muy significativo para nuestra familia.

Nuestro tío abuelo murió en la Guerra de Corea mientras servía en el Batallón Colombia. En nuestra familia hay muchos militares, la mayoría de ellos han servido en el Ejército o en la Armada.

En ese entonces, el Ejército notificó a dos hermanos —nuestro abuelo y nuestro tío abuelo—, quienes tenían casi la misma edad, y les dio la oportunidad de decidir quién iría. A tan corta edad, decidieron lanzar una moneda. El hermano elegido por el lanzamiento de la moneda, nuestro tío abuelo, fue a Corea, luchó y murió en la guerra.

El hermano que se quedó, nuestro abuelo, siempre enseñó la importancia de este día y de recordar a quienes murieron en combate. En nuestra familia, a menudo se dice que si la moneda hubiera caído de otra manera, toda nuestra historia habría sido distinta. Hoy estamos aquí gracias a ese momento y gracias al servicio y sacrificio de nuestro tío abuelo, Cascante Parra, Jesús María.
